It is very controversial whether or not our society is impacted by the images and messages displayed in music. Most people believe that teenagers and young adults are the ones who face the most impact.

According to study by Brian A. Primack, M.D., Ed.M, M.S., Center for Research on Health Care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, degrading musical content leads to increased sexual activity. Primack states, “Among this sample of young adolescents, high exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex in popular music was independently associated with higher levels of sexual behavior. In fact, exposure to lyrics describing degrading sex was one of the strongest associations with sexual activity…These results provide further support for the need for additional research and educational intervention in this area" (Nauert, 2009).

Popular music is very easily accessible as it is played on the radio, internet, and television. With the availability of this type of music, adolescents are able to listen and download music in many different settings and situations.
Conclusion:
Since music videos were first produced in the early 1980s, sexuality in music has become an increasing issue. Hip-hop and popular music typically reinforce gender stereotypes in their lyrics and music videos. Women especially have become a target to the use of sexuality through objectification and provocative body language. It is difficult to find music videos that challenge the stereotypical gender roles because our society is just starting to accept new perspectives and opinions. The music videos that do challenge the stereotypical role for women are mostly produced by women. Hopefully, as our world continues to quickly change, the messages in hip-hop and popular music videos will also change because they have a stronger impact on our youth than must of use believe.
what can we do to change this?:
Unfortunately, there is not much we can do to change this quality of the music industry apart from raising awareness. It is important to show parents the effects of sexual content in music videos because these videos are so easily accessible to children. Apart from parents, it is important for the primary audience of popular music, teenagers and college students, to understand the use of stereotypes in music videos. Next time these songs are heard, take a second listen at the messages the artists are portraying before playing them for a larger audience. Teenagers and college students are the leaders of the future and have the ability to change the growing trends of these negative stereotypes aimed toward women.
